Robert Eggers' visually stunning remake of the 1922 classic vampire tale stars Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Bill Skarsgård and Willem Dafoe.

A modern master of the period horror film, Robert Eggers (The Lighthouse, The Witch) delivers deeply unsettling thrills with his much-anticipated remake of F.W. Murnau's classic, which garnered Oscar nominations for Cinematography, Production Design, Makeup and Costumes. This gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman (Lily-Rose Depp) and the terrifying vampire (Bill Skarsgård) infatuated with her also features stellar supporting turns by Nicholas Hoult, Willem Dafoe and Simon McBurney.

Murnau's unauthorized adaptation of Dracula was almost lost to history after Bram Stoker's widow sued for copyright infringement and a court ordered that all copies of the film should be destroyed—but thankfully, a few prints of this early horror masterpiece survived. But the Nosferatu version of the legend differs from Dracula by connecting the arrival of the ancient vampire with the onset of a terrible plague. In 1922, this was clearly playing on lingering fears related to the 1918 outbreak of Spanish Influenza, which took the lives of nearly 50 million people. There is no question that Eggers' take on the legend draws on terror from our own recent pandemic—and like many horror films, offers the audience some kind of catharsis.
